Its famous brick-red tomato originated in Russia and has a cult following among seed collectors and tomato connoisseurs who just can't get enough of its distinctive smoky and sweet flavor. Moscow seedsman Marina Danilenko shared it with Seed Savers Exchange founder Kent Whealy in the 1990s when he was looking to connect with breeders and seed savers in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Danilenko also contributed about 170 other Russian tomato varieties to the Seed Savers collection. It is named after the famous opera singer Paul Robeson, born in 1936. the stars of the movie Showboat, in honor. Robeson was an influential African-American activist, artist, actor, and athlete in the early to mid-20th century.
