The Carnica variety is said to have originated from Germany and was named by C. Schank. Yet other sources say it is an Italian heritage variety and was grown by an old Italian family in the mountain valley for 40 years. The seeds were brought to Germany and the variety was only then registered as a German variety. But this is not true. The red fruits are small in size, cylindrical in shape, 5 to 8 cm long and ending with a dot, weighing 20 to 50 g. Some fruits may have a narrowing, that’s why it resembles a pear in its shape. The flesh is meaty and "dry", with very little juice, which makes this variety ideal for drying or making sauces. The strongly sweet and rich taste allows us to say with confidence that Carnica is better than San Marzano. The main feature of this variety is its height, which reaches even 7.0 m.
